Iran’s Para Athletics secured 20 Paralympic berths for Paris
2024 Games, including 14 slots per PI events and 6 slots per VI events.
The squad celebrates its tenth Summer
Paralympics appearance at the Games.
Paris 2024 event program
Para athletics is the largest sport
on the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games programme in terms of participating athletes
and the number of medal events. Up to 1,069 athletes will compete across 164
medal events in Track and Field and Marathon in the French capital from 30 August – 8 September.
Track: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1,500m,
5,000m, 4x100m Universal Relay
Field: Long jump, Club throw, High jump,
Discus throw, Javelin throw, Shot put
The Venue
The world’s best runners, throwers and
jumpers will gather in the Stade de France, the country’s largest stadium. The
venue, located in Saint-Denis, was originally built for the 1998 FIFA World
Cup, and since then, has staged some of the world’s biggest sporting moments.
At the Rugby World Cup last year, 10 matches, including the tournament opener and
the final, took place here.
Marathon route
The marathon will take place on 8 September 2024, the final
day of the Games. The race will start in Seine-Saint-Denis and finish in front
of the Esplanade des Invalides, taking athletes on a spectacular tour of the
French capital as they pass by iconic landmarks including the Place de la
Concorde and the Arc de Triomphe.
Brief History of Iran Para Athletics at Paralympics
Team Iran’s Para Athletics have appeared at nine editions of the
Summer Paralympic Games, since Seoul 1988 to Tokyo 2020.
Seoul 1988
Iran Para Athletics made its Paralympics debut at Seoul 1988.
*The team featured 17 athletes at the Games and finished in 26th
place (out of 57) in medal table, with 7 medals, including three golds, a
silver and three bronzes.
*The first Paralympics gold medalists of Iran Para Athletic
were Javad Abdollahzadeh, Mokhtar Nourafshan and Mohammad Hadi Yarahmadi.
*Iran’s Discus Thrower Hasan Samavati carried the national flag
at the athletes’ parade in the opening ceremony of the Games.
Barcelona 1992
Iran Para Athletics appeared at Paralympics Barcelona 1992, for second time.
*A total 15 Para athletes represented Team Iran’s Para
Athletics at the Games and concluded their actions with two silvers and a
bronze.
Atlanta 1996
At the Atlanta 1996 Paralympic Games, Team Iran’s Athletics featured
seven athletes, a significant decrease compared to its previous Paralympics
appearances, and won a total of 12 medals, including 7 golds, 4 silvers and a
bronze.
The squad was led by Head Coach Bahman Rezaei.
Sydney 2000
A total of 12 athletes from Iran
competed at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, winning nine golds and 15 total
medals.
*Iranian women debuted their Paralympic
appearance in Para Athletics events of the Sydney 2000. The Shot-Putter Fatemeh
Montazeri represented Team Iran in Women’s division for the first time and ranked fifth place.
*Iran’s gold medalists at Sydney 2000
were Avaz Azmoudeh, Abdolreza Jokar, Aref Khosravinia, Mohammad Sedeghi Mahyar,
Ghader Modaber, Mokhtar Nourafshan and Mohammadreza Mirzaei.
*The squad stood 16th in the medal
standings.
Athens 2004
At the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games, 28
Iranian representatives –including three female athletes- were conducted by the
Head Coach Bahman Rezaei, winning four golds and 15 total medals.
*Team Iran’s Discus Thrower Azam
Khodayari claimed a bronze medal at Athens 2004, for the first time in Women’s
division of the Paralympics.
* Iranian Mohammad Sadeghi Mahyar,
Siamak Seleh Farajzadeh, Mohammadreza Mirzaei and Ali Naderi won the gold
medals at Athens 2004.
Beijing 2008
Iran Para Athletics team, featuring
14 athletes, left Beijing with a total of 6 medals (2 golds, 3 silvers and a
bronze).
*Mohammadreza Mirzaei carried the
national flag at the athletes’ parade in the opening ceremony of the Games.
London 2012
Iran Para Athletics sent a total of 16
athletes to the London 2012, 14 men and 2 women, to celebrate their seventh appearance
at the Summer Paralympics Games.
* Winning a total of 13 medals,
including five golds, the squad finished 11th.
*Iran’s Peyman Nasiri claimed a gold
medal in Men's 1500 m T20 final, for the first time.
*Jalil Bagheri, Mohsen Kaeidi, Javad
Hardani and Mohammad Khalvandi were among the Iranian gold medalists.
*Abdolreza Jokar carried the national
flag at the athletes’ parade in the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Games.
Rio 2016
Iran entered 27 athletes (24 men and 3
women) into the Para Athletics tournament of Rio 2016.
*The Javelin Thrower Mohammad
Khalvandi in men’s F57 was the only gold medallist for Team Iran’s Para
Athletics at Rio 2016.
Tokyo 2020
Team Iran’s Para Athletics won five
golds and 11 total medals at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
The Games marked a historic moment
for Iran Para Athletics when Hashemiyeh Motaghian, with a World record throw of
24.50m, became the first female athlete from the country to earn gold at either
the Paralympic or Olympic Games.
The opening ceremony flag-bearers for
Team Iran were Para Archer Zahra Nemati and Para Shot Putter Nourmohammad
Arekhi.
