The Iranian cyclist Bahman Golbarnezhad was tragically killed at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games a one year ago.
Golbarnezhad, 48, died after crashing during the C4-5 cycling road race in Pontal, a small peninsula and beach area in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood, located in the West Zone of the city.
He suffered a cardiac arrest on the way to hospital after incurring a head injury following a collision with a rock while descending midway through the race.
Golbarnezhad was 14th in the time-trial and also competed at the London 2012 Paralympics. He was Iran’s sole cyclist at the Rio Games.
Afterward, the Iranian flag was lowered to half-mast in the athletes' village.
The flag of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) was also flown in memory of Bahman Golbarnezhad.
